The Intel CE 5038 DVB-S2 tuner is an advanced modulation tuner device designed specifically for satellite set top boxes meeting the DVB-S2 standard. The higher data rates delivered by DVBS2 allow satellite service providers to roll out new applications, including HDTV services and satellite broadband access.
The Intel CE 5038 DVB-S2 tuner is a fully integrated single-chip wideband 8-PSK and 16-QAM compatible direct conversion tuner. As illustrated in the application diagram, the device integrates a LNA with a selectable RF loop-through for connecting to a second receiver module. It is a high-performance, alignment-free tuner solution, providing balanced I/Q signals to a DVB-S2 satellite demodulator.
The totally integrated phase-noise jitter performance of the on-chip local oscillator (LO) provides the carrier-to-noise margin required for difficult operating conditions. The Intel CE 5038 DVB-S2 tuner delivers a guaranteed maximum of 2 degrees of integrated phase jitter over the full operational temperature range.
The LO is designed to provide automatic and manual tuning modes to ensure optimum phase noise under all operating conditions. The automatic tuning mode is intended for 8-PSK modulation, while the manual tuning mode offers the flexibility required for 16-QAM modulation.
The Intel CE 5038 DVB-S2 tuner has excellent adjacent channel-interference protection, cable-slope handling and total composite power range, providing essential performance in today’s ever-changing broadcast environment. The device consumes less than 1.5 W, and is equipped with a hardware sleep pin and software programmable current reduction modes, enabling up to 60-percent reduction in power consumption. These power reduction features assist manufacturers in meeting Energy Star* requirements.
