小米采用意法半导体低功耗电磁罗盘模块LSM303D0

元器件交易网讯 12月18日消息,据外媒EETimes报道,意法半导体最近推出LSM303D加速度传感器电磁罗盘复合模块供中国智能机领导者小米使用。

“我们的MEMS技术在各个层面上都有所提升,包括能耗、性能、价格以及物理尺寸,”意法半导体副总裁兼模拟MEMS及传感器组件部门总经理本纳迪多·魏格纳(Benedetto Vigna)在一份声明中称。“同样,这反过来也会允许像小米这样充满活力的公司提高自己在市场中的定位。”

STMicroelectronics recently introduced itsLSM303D accelerometer and magnetometer combo module to Chinese smartphoneleader Xiaomi (Mi1S), known as the country’s answer to Apple.

“Our MEMS technology continues to raise the bar in every quarter:power consumption, performance, price, and physical size,” said BenedettoVigna, executive vice president and general manager of the analog, MEMS, andsensors group at STMicroelectronics, in a statement. “This, in turn, allowsdynamic new companies such as Xiaomi to raise the bar in their own markets.”

STM developed its family of eCompassesaround the principal of magneto resistance (MR) -- where a material changes thevalue of electrical resistance when an external magnetic field is applied -- todecrease power consumption. Devices, including the recently released LSM303,use MR “matching or exceeding the performance of competitive devices in modulesize, full-scale resolution and noise,” the release stated.

The LSM303 accurately measures thedirection and magnitude of external magnetic fields, while the module’saccelerometer compensates for tilt to ensure an accurate compass heading whenportable devices are inclined. LSM303 combines a 3-axis magnetic-field sensorand a 3-axis accelerometer in a single tiny 2x2x1 mm module.

“This is a peripheral piece that… could be useful in location-basedservices, if you were walking around in a mall or were driving and wanted toknow where you were,” an ST spokesman told EE Times.

In November, the LSM303C, a member of thesame family of devices, was selected as device of the year by the MEMS IndustryGroup for its improved power consumption and size.

“In smartphones and other mobile devices, every milliwatt matters,”said Vigna. “The ST device meets minimal size constraints and allowssignificant reductions in power consumption without compromising performance inother areas. These advantages help manufacturers to provide mobile devices thatmeet customer expectations while minimizing the drain on the world’sresources.”

The LSM303D is already shipping, and STplans to introduce new models shortly.
